Workshop Information

Research demonstrates that dyslexic students process and retain information more effectively when learning engages their superior visual and narrative strengths. Join Marie Foley in learning how to teach students to read, spell and write by combining Structured Word Inquiry and visual narrative reasoning. Marie’s workshops offer educators a unique perspective on literacy instruction, as she herself is dyslexic and she has been diagnosed as having ADHD combined type. Participants will gain valuable insight from an insiders perspective on what makes learning to read, spell and write difficult and how to enhance your current literacy practice to help your students succeed.

The difference between the micro workshops and the 3-session workshop intensive series is that the 3-session workshops goes into more depth on each topic. The 3-session workshop series also offers participants time to practice new skills through optional assignments and customized feedback to ensure participants can plan and design lesson which are accessible to dyslexic learners.

Overall both the micro workshop and the 3-session workshop aim to help participants to:

  • Learn to use visual narrative to create lessons which build upon the strengths of dyslexic learners and ensure students can access, store and retrieve the information necessary to read, spell and comprehend the writing system.

  • Design visuals that help students at different grade levels grasp key concepts in orthography including: morphological elements, word history, suffixing patterns, spelling conventions, markers, vowel reduction, and assimilated prefixes.

  • Improve learning outcomes by creating lessons that present complex information visually thereby reducing cognitive load and making instruction more accessible and engaging.

  • Assist students create their own visual narratives so they are better able to understand, retain and recall the tools they require to read and spell lifelong.

  • Received customized feedback on homework assignments and acquire skills to create lessons that help dyslexic learners make sense of the writing system.

Making Sense Of Words With Morphology

The micro workshop is designed to introduce participants who are curious to learn more about morphology and aquire creative tools to integrate morphology into their current teaching practice.

The workshop offers innovative teaching strategies that will help participants to:

  • Create visuals to explain the morphological structure of English and demonstrate how a word’s journey into English influences its spelling.

  • Discover how to use visuals to help students make sense of silent letters, vowel reduction and assimilated prefixes.

  • Explore how to use visuals to explain suffixing conventions and help students to store and retrieve these spelling patterns.

  • Learn how to adapt existing classroom materials to include a focus on morphology.

3-Session Workshop: July

INTEGRATING MORPHOLOGY INTO LITERACY INSTRUCTION

Using visual narrative and structured word inquiry to help students make sense of English.

The three-part workshop series provides an in-depth opportunity to learn about the benefits of morphology and how it improves literacy instruction. Through hands-on, experiential learning, participants will practice creating visuals that explain a range of orthographic concepts. Customized feedback will be provided on all assigned projects. Upon completion, participants will have developed the skills to design visually engaging lessons that help students access a deeper understanding of the writing system.

In this workshop series, participants will learn to:

  • Create visuals to explain the morphological structure of English and demonstrate how a word’s journey into English influences its spelling.

  • Discover how to use visuals to help students make sense of silent letters, vowel reduction and assimilated prefixes.

  • Explore how to design visuals to help students make sense of words that are frequently described as having irregular spelling patterns.

  • Explain suffixing conventions using visuals to promote understanding and help students store and apply this information as needed.

  • Learn how to redesign exisiting classroom material to ensure the information is accessible for all learners.
